The Basics
A simple search on the Internet and you will come across scores of websites, with different mix and matches of graphics, layouts, designs, and everything. Now, the question is, “how many websites do manage to create a lasting impression on you?” Not many, I guess. Why? This is because not many designers do think about users when designing a website. On the contrary, most web designers design a website on the basis on what they like, not what will work. To be very frank, it doesn’t really matter what you want to do, but what you should do to make your website work…it is as simple as that.
Now, how do you design a website that will attract customers? Simple, follow the basics.
Graphics
Use graphics judiciously, and preferably sparingly. Decide what you are selling and what are the USPs of your product or service. Now, stick to them. Graphics unnecessarily detract visitors, not to mention of the time they take to load. Your visitors will simply switch to another website if they don’t find ready information at the very first glance. This being said, too much of text may be equally boring. Remember, no one has the time to read the entire text to collect information. They need highlighted points supported by figures and statistics (if possible).
Layout
A poor layout will make your pages unreadable; visitors will simply switch over to another website. some of the major detractors that are responsible for substantial loss of traffic are small texts, unreadable fonts, color combination that are irritable to the eyes, large and heavy-to-load graphic files, multiple blinking banners, complex navigation, never-ending animation sequences, etc.
Content
It has been rightly said, ‘Content is the King’. Cleary thought out content can do wonders for your website. Take a very detailed approach and take the pain when researching your content. Help is available everywhere and you can even take expert help while planning for your content.
The points mentioned above are the simplest yet mostly ignored. Don’t follow the crowd, do something so that you can stand out. After all, you certainly don’t want a unsuccessful venture…do you? you wont if you change your carpet.
