December 03, 2010 - With the growth of web, the number of issues relating to infringing content has also increased. Though Google has been promptly responding to the requests to remove the infringed content from its services, yet the company has always been criticized for being lax about copyright protection. It has been consistently working on improving its procedures over time, yet has not been able to escape from being dragged to the courts in the U.S. and abroad over the issues related to copyright and patent infringements.
Google has now pledged to enhance copyright protection by improving its anti-piracy policies and procedures. It is going to implement the below mentioned four main changes over the next few months:
1. Acting on authentic copyright takedown requests with 24hrs: Google has decided to implement new tools to improve the submission process so as to facilitate the rights’ holders in submitting DMCA takedown requests for Google products. Moreover, the average responding time will be reduced to 24 hrs or less for the copyright owners using the tools conscientiously.
2. Preventing terms closely associated with piracy from appearing in Autocomplete: Though it is a tough task, yet Google is taking measures to remove the piracy-related suggestions from its search query auto-complete feature.
3. Improvement in AdSense anti-piracy review: To prohibit the use of AdSense program on the web pages consisting of infringed materials, Google is structuring its DMCA takedown procedures. With the help of copyright holders, Google will identify and expel violators from AdSense programs.
4. Endeavor to increase the visibility of authorized content in its search engine results: It is looking forward to make the authentic content easier to index and find.
