Creative Education Institute (CEI) provides learning programs to help students improve reading, language, and academic skills. CEI offers ELSO, a web-based learning program where students practice reading, vocabulary, phonics, and language skills through simple, interactive exercises and quizzes. The client approached us to make their web app 'ELSO' simpler and more interactive so that students can learn more effectively and stay engaged.
The client asked us to improve their 'ELSO' web app by updating the Vocabulary Quiz module. They wanted to replace the existing match-the-word line selection system (where students drew lines between words and their meanings) with a textbox input feature, where students type the correct word next to each definition. They also wanted the quiz to work the same way as before, show scores correctly, and display properly on all devices.
We worked on this by adding a text box beside each definition so students could type their answers. We used JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to build and connect this feature with the existing quiz system. Our team fixed the layout, checked that the text boxes stayed in the right place on different screen sizes, and made sure the answers were read and scored correctly. We tested the update using multiple student accounts to confirm that the first set of eight words loaded properly, text boxes appeared consistently, and the quiz worked without breaking any other part of the web app.
This work helped the client because the quiz became easier for students to use. Typing the answer made the activity more engaging and supported better learning. It also helped teachers review student progress more clearly, making the module more useful for everyday learning.
